Saturday

There's an episode of How I Met Your Mother where we see long-term couple Lily and Marshall execute their version of the familiar routine that involves telling your significant other all about your day. Unlike most couples, they don't just note the highlights but rather relate their day in absurd detail, beginning and ending when they last saw each other. Sometimes, my husband and I like to follow suit, just to be silly.

In light of that...
On Saturday

I woke up late and savored the sound of shovels scraping away last night's snow while I remained snug under the covers. This is admittedly one of the perks of renting.

Around 9:30 am, I finally moseyed downstairs, at which point my husband informed me that my chai latte was getting cold. Now, I had hinted none too subtly earlier in the week that a weekend chai latte would be much appreciated, but I love that he remembered and had one waiting for me. While I can certainly be a tea snob, I'm not above heating up my tea in the microwave. So, I quickly settled down on the couch with my reheated drink, juice and giant bowl of Cheerios, topped with fruit, toasted walnuts and cinnamon. Very honestly, I start thinking about the next morning's bowl of Cheerios as I'm falling asleep at night. This doctored up cereal is just that good.

After much leisurely blogging and blog reading on my part, my husband and I finally pried ourselves off the couch to get ready and go to the gym. However, we were easily distracted with random tasks like laundry, dishes, bill-paying, counter-clearing and errands.  Therefore, we didn't make it to the gym until closer to 1 pm.

During the week, I usually only manage to squeeze in 20-30 minute workouts, so on the weekends, I allow myself the luxury of a longer workout, in this case 40-45 minutes of magazine reading on the elliptical. I'm not positive of the exact time, because I accidentally turned off the machine when I went to retrieve my cell phone, which I managed to buck off.

By the time I showered and got dressed, it was 3 pm. So, I ate a toaster oven quesadilla and half of a black and white cookie for a late lunch while looking at restaurant.com coupons with my husband (Do you ever use restaurant.com coupons? They keep us from just going back to our same favorite places all the time, which I would happily do otherwise).

Then, I hurried to the dry cleaners before they closed. We had a lot of stuff to drop off, so I toddled over, arms full and wrapped up in several layers to ward off the cold.

I told myself that I didn't need to stop at the library on the way back, because today was actually one of the few Saturdays that I didn't have any reserves to pick up. However, it's right across the street from the dry cleaners, and somehow, I found myself inside, browsing the new books. While doing so, I ran into an acquaintance who apparently also visits the library every Saturday, because I frequently bump into her on that exact spot. We chatted for a bit, then I headed back, but not before checking out another book to add to my pile at home.

At home, I did some miscellaneous housework (like hand-washing a hat, tidying the freezer and working on a grocery list), before a respectable time for dinner rolled around. We tried a new place, thanks to restaurants.com. It was very Italian, as in we shared a family-style gnocchi and bolognese sauce dish and tiramisu and appeared to be the only non-Italian-Americans there. I thought it was pretty fun.

After coming home, I engaged in yet more miscellaneous chores, including vacuuming and online shopping. I am sorry to report that I may have just now gotten around to ordering some Christmas presents. Clearly, gift-giving is not my forte.

Finally, I blogged and went to bed entirely too late.

Question - What was some of the minutia from your Saturday?

  1. Sounds like you had a very productive day and it sounds like my Saturdays often do. I send out a weekend up date every weekend to our families of what we have done that weekend and it gets hard to write when you just keep saying that you did errands, laundry, and pulled weeds. However, I have done some of my most creative writing and formatting as I am trying to make laundry sound interesting.

    1. You should share a version of your weekend update sometime.

  2. I love reading about city life! We live in the country, which definitely has its pleasures, but I dream of having a little cottage somewhere where we could walk or ride our bicycles into town to run errands, visit a bookstore, and have coffee.

Our Saturday minutia usually involves dropping someone at a birthday party or practice, cleaning out litter boxes, laundry (always laundry), and dozens of other little jobs. And trying out new recipes like your ginger scones!

    1. We often lament that we don't live the quintessential, urban lifestyle. However, I will say, even though we're not doing exotic things every day, I'm very happy that I can walk to most everything I need/want - grocery store, restaurants, pharmacy and, most importantly, the library.

And yest, I'm never quite sure how laundry manages to eat my weekends the way that it frequently does.
