I did it.
I joined a gym.
In one careless moment with my luggage over the holidays, I managed to twist my back, which has sidelined me from running for the several weeks. I tried keeping up with things with long walks and stair sprints, but I still felt my cardiovascular fitness diminishing. To be honest, I was getting a bit grumpy about it. So, we upgraded my husband's membership at the local YMCA, and right now, I sense no hint of buyer's remorse. In fact, after my first elliptical session as a newly minted member, I treated my husband to some rather chipper chatter all the way home. In addition to my uplifted mood, I no longer have to resist the irrational urge to run that had been welling up. Instead, I'm prioritizing my back health and planning how to cautiously reintroduce running, hopefully in the near future.
Meanwhile, I'll continue easing back into gym life, getting to know the early morning retiree crowd as well as the evening, swimming-lesson families and buff, night staff.
Question - If you go to a gym, what members of your community do you find there?

I haven't belonged to a gym in a long time, but when I did, I saw the professional after work crowd. They were all there after work just like me.
ReplyDeleteAnother thought for you--They say that the elliptical is a lot easier on your joints than running.
I definitely find the elliptical to be easier on my knees. That's why I try to take the opportunity to use it whenever I get a chance, particularly when I've been running more. I'd also really like to be able to swim laps for low-impact cardio, but to be honest, I'm a terrible swimmer. It's pretty embarrassing, actually.
DeleteI see a lot of people at the pool "swimming" with kick boards.
