I have niece who makes pottery (actually she has a degree in ceramics) and one time she told me about the different ways mugs are designed depending upon their purpose. The most basic difference is between whether they will be used commercially and stacked or for individual home use.
For me the perfect mug is all about the handle. Four fingers have to be able to fit through it comfortably.
